Employment Background Checks: Its Types

There are so many things to do when looking for a new job, so it can be stressful. However, all aspects of obtaining a specific job, from writing an appropriate resume to ensuring a successful interview to checking your background through Mobile Notary Public, are trivial and vital.

Why are Employment Background Checks Important?

Background checks on potential employees are important for employers because they offer the company a wealth of information about the employee that aids them in deciding whether or not to hire them.

In addition, it is a way to determine if the information the potential employee provided is accurate. Employers conduct these screenings in compliance with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) requirements.

Potential employees can undergo pre-employment background checks, including a criminal record check, a verification of past employment, and education record check, and a license check.

Types of Checks

1.    Criminal Records

Criminal record checks provide details about an individual's criminal history. You can perform a physical criminal record check, a CPIC (Name and Date of Birth Based Criminal Record Check), or a fingerprint-based Certified Criminal Record Check. As no two fingerprints are the same, a Certified Criminal Record Check is the most accurate representation of a person's criminal record.

Employers should examine the following aspects when considering a criminal record:

1.    the date it occurred,
2.    the nature of the offense,
3.    alongside how the offense may relate to the potential employee's job/position.

The requirements for a criminal record check may vary depending on the employment.

2.    Education and Professional Licences

Employers can determine whether the information on their resume is accurate by reviewing the potential employee's past employment history. Further, employers will usually look at a potential employee's educational background and any licenses he or she has obtained.

Please note that the employer may request your degree or transcript (if applicable).

3.    Social Security Traces

When using social security traces, employers can view previous addresses, past names used at previous employers, and places of employment that are not listed on a resume.

4.    Social Media Check

A social media check assists employers in verifying whether the candidate provided accurate information and identifying any red flags. LinkedIn, for example, can be used by employers to verify that candidates have provided accurate employment histories. In addition, one can review one's social media history to detect bullying, harm, violence, and toxicity.

5.    Reference Check

Resumes often state, 'References are available upon request.' Perhaps you are wondering what this means. You may need to check the references you provide for the employer to verify the accuracy of your employment and education history. A potential employer has the full authority to deny your application if you provide any false information regarding your background.

6.    Professional Qualification Check

This check is designed to verify that the applicant has the applicable membership and that it is still valid and not expired. Certain occupations require a specific professional license, such as careers in medicine or real estate.
