What is medical Power of Attorney?

Power of Attorney for Personal Care(or Medical Power of Attorney) gives someone legal authority to make important healthcare decisions on your behalf. For example, medical power of attorney could authorize a healthcare professional to decide your treatment options, medication, surgery, or end-of-life care. Healthcare agents or proxies are the people you name in your Power of Attorney (POA) to make medical decisions on your behalf.

The medical POA might also be called, depending on where you live:

1. Power of attorney for healthcare

2. Advance directive

3. Advancing healthcare directive

4. Power of attorney for health care

5. Power of attorney for personal care

When does your medical POA take effect?

Whenever you become incapacitated, a durable medical POA kicks in. For example, if you:

1. Were under general anesthesia

2. If you were unable to communicate due to an illness, such as a stroke

3. If you were in a coma or unresponsive following an accident

4. If you suffer from Alzheimer's or another neurological condition that affects your ability to make rational decisions

Why do you need a medical power of attorney?

In addition to creating a medical POA before a medical emergency occurs, there are many other reasons for doing so. Here are some reasons you might consider:

1. To create a sense of well-being.

2. To prepare for a major medical procedure.

3. When diagnosed with a degenerative disease, some concerns need to be addressed.
